Interview with Miss Intercontinental Scotland – Catriona Nunan-Davidson

Firstly thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions about your pageant journey for my pageant lockdown blog. It’s lovely getting to know fellow queens and more about the systems that they represent.

What made you enter pageants?

I grew up doing theatre and acting and it was always my passion. When I moved countries, I couldn’t find anything to do on stage until I stumbled across a blog about pageantry. I read more about it and realized it was something I would be interested in and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Have you competed before Miss Intercontinental Scotland?

My pageant journey is short but fun-packed. I entered the UK galaxy pageants in the teen division for my first pageant and I was amazed to come top 5 and walk away with the best in interview award. I then competed in the power pageant and came top 12. My third pageant was miss intercontinental UK where I was lucky enough to win!!

What made you decide to compete in Miss Intercontinental Scotland?

When moving from the teen division to the miss division, I wasn’t sure what pageant would be best suited to me. After doing some research, Miss intercontinental stood out to me for its platform, the ‘power of beauty’. I’m a firm believer that beauty is much more than your outward appearance so I knew this was the pageant for me.

What’s the best thing that pageants have taught you?

Wow where to begin… pageants have taught me to believe in myself, that I am good enough to do anything I set my mind to. They have taught me to be selfless, be confident, be kind and most of all to be the type of person I want to see more of in the world.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is mental health education. Growing up I really struggled with my mental health, I never felt like I fit in anywhere. I felt like I wasn’t good enough, but the truth is that the things that make us different also make us special and that is something I think everybody should understand. I have an online forum with over 13,000 people where I talk about my journey and hopefully inspire others to love themselves.

What’s your dream title?

I like to live in the moment so right now Miss Intercontinental Scotland is my dream title as I worked so hard for it. I would definitely be lying however if I didn’t say we all dreamed of being a Miss Universe so who knows what the future has in store for me 😉

What was it like when you Miss Intercontinental Scotland?

Crowning Moment

I was in utter shock when I heard my name called. I knew I had done my best and worked hard so it was always a possibility but the girls I competed against were so amazing that I couldn’t call who the winners would be. It was my dad’s first time watching me compete so I was so grateful to win when he was there to support me. The stars aligned for me that day and I am so blessed.

What’s the beat advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

As stereotypical as it may sound, my best advice is to be yourself. What makes you stand out are the qualities that make you different. I even made a joke about how much I love McDonald’s in my interview.

What have you been doing since you Miss Intercontinental Scotland ?

Straight after we won, we kicked into preparation for our international competition in Egypt. After I came back in January, I did various appearances including watching pageants and working with my charity of choice Cancer research, where I volunteer on weekends.

What’s your favourite ever appearance?

This is such a hard question. I would have to say my favorite appearance was a charity bingo night I held in my community. It was so much fun to see everyone and we managed to raise £300 for charity that night.

How has the lockdown due to COVID19 effected your pageant journey?

I had only been back from internationals for a couple of months when lockdown hit and it has taken a toll on the amount of appearances I have been able to do. I have always been determined to use my title as much as I can but balancing a law degree and the lockdown situation has made it difficult. Still, I’m staying positive and doing what I can with my title from my home.

What makes a good pageant role model?

For me, a good pageant role model is approachable, kind and involved in her community. She should be someone that you aspire to be like and someone who makes you want to be the best version of yourself. Most of all, she should be proud of the system she represents and the pageant community as a whole.

What’s your favorite pageant round?

My favorite round has to be swimwear. It’s so energetic and fun and leaves the audience with a big smile on their face. It is your chance to show your personality to the judges.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I’m quite lucky that I have stage experience so I don’t get as nervous as others might do but my best advice would be to smile through the nerves. When you arrive at the pageant, all your prep is done and there is nothing more that you can do so just smile and enjoy it because it’s over sooner than you think.
