Interview with Miss Intercontinental England 2019/2020 – Georgia Nickerson

Firstly thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions about your pageant journey for my pageant lockdown blog it’s been lovely to read more about pageant queens and the systems they represent.

What made you enter pageants?

From a young age I was scouted by an agency and began modelling, my first ever shoot being for a Ted Baker campaign at the age of 13. This led to more contracted commercial work and catwalk modelling. I fell in love with the stage and the feeling I got when I was on there.

Around the same time, I began fundraising for a local palliative care hospice and have been working alongside them for the past 9 years now. So, when I heard of pageantry I thought it would be perfect for me. So, I did a lot of research and found the Miss Teen Great Britain organisation and applied back in 2015 when I was 17.

So you have competed before Miss Intercontinental England, can you tell us more about your pageant journey?

I have competed 8 times in total and have gained different opportunities at each pageant. My first pageant was Miss Teen Great Britain in October 2015, after partaking in this pageant I was completely hooked and felt so empowered from each girl’s support. I then competed at Teen Face of The World UK in May 2016 and was chosen as an international finalist for Face of The World 2016 which was a part of Birmingham September fashion week placing Teen 1st runner up.

From here I went to compete at World Supermodel / Top Model England in November 2017 my first Miss pageant and was crowned Top Model of England 2017 and represented England at Top Model of The World 2018 in Egypt for 2 weeks in December. Placing top 15 across 60 countries and being the first English candidate to place within years and years of the international competition and was signed by Euro model’s agency.

In June 2019 I entered the UK Power Pageant in the hope of winning the Miss Intercontinental title however this was no longer available through this system. But came home from the competition with a Top 12 placement and some incredible new friends.

The Miss Intercontinental UK new system was launched and I competed for the England title in September 2019 and was lucky enough to be crowned the winner! The international final of Miss Intercontinental 2019 was held in December 2019 in Egypt for 4 weeks. I placed Top 20 across 80 countries and Top 6 for Europe. Taking away the Miss Sunrise Resorts award where I won a stay at each one of their hotels across Egypt.

What made you decide to compete in Miss Intercontinental England ?

The international competition of Miss Intercontinental and Top Model of The World is ran by The World Beauty Organisation. My experience with them at Top Model in 2018 was phenomenal and I fell in love with their organisation. I knew I wanted to work with them again as they gave me so much guidance and allowed me to be the best version of myself. Not only did this influence me but the Miss Intercontinental system is the 7th most prestigious pageant in the world!

What the best thing that pageants have taught you ?

Pageants have taught me to be myself and know that is enough. This is through all the support from other contestants throughout the whole pageant journey.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My pageant platform is within women’s health, I support a charity called “Bloody Good Period”. This charity provides sanitary products to those who can’t afford them and menstrual education to those less likely to access it.

They are partnered with 50 drop-in access centres across the country, getting products to asylum seekers, refugees and those who can’t afford them. Along with supporting homeless shelters, those resettling after prison release and refuges.

This is 2000 packs of products per month and over 60,000 periods taken care of. The aim of the charity is to educate and make the public aware on menstrual and sexual health and to work against the “period poverty”.

I chose this charity to educate others because it isn’t something widely spoken about or that people necessarily know exists or is even there. 1 in 30 girls miss school a day because of the lack of access to period products.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title was to win Miss Intercontinental England and to represent England on that international stage! Of course, it would have been a dream to have come home being crowned Miss Intercontinental 2019. But placing as highly as I did came pretty close!

How did it feel when you were announced the winner of Miss Intercontinental England ?

When I won my title, I was filled with emotion I just cried. I remember looking over at the table full of my family and seeing their smiles and cheers. Along with other pageant girls from all systems genuinely being so happy because your dream came true. I set my eyes on the Miss Intercontinental England title and worked as hard as I could and it payed off. I felt so honoured that I had been trusted with representing the new launch of the system and to work with the international organisation again.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

“If you believe you can achieve” have faith in yourself and work hard! Inspire others to chase their dreams as you have a little bit of encouragement goes along way.

What have you been doing since you won Miss Intercontinental England ?

Since I won my title I represented England internationally at the 48th Miss Intercontinetal pageant. Placing Top 20 from 80 contestants and Top 6 Europe. I have continued to support the Miss Intercontinental UK’s chosen charity ‘Women’s Aid’ by educating on the importance of their work and donating funds especially during the COVID-19 health pandemic lockdown.

Alongside this advocating for women’s health by fundraising for ‘Bloody Good Period’ charity and sharing the importance on education in this subject. Alongside I have continued appearances and have been interviewed by different magazines and news companies, have been a special guest at events and have been booked for modelling jobs. I have attended and supported other pageants such as Miss Teen Great Britain and Miss Galaxy UK.

I have more appearances planned right till the end of the year even after handover as I want to promote the organisation and stay apart of the pageant community.

What’s your favourite ever appearance so far ?

My favourite appearances happened because I am a part of the pageant community. I have been signed by two major prom and pageant dress suppliers in the UK. I have worked on the catwalk and catalogue set for Angel Forever and To The Nines campaigns.

How has the lockdown due to COVID-19 effected your pageant journey?

Lockdown has changed my pageant journey, but it has only made everyone stronger and closer. I have seen so many amazing fundraising ideas done online and what a perfect time to get involved whilst we are staying at home. I have been involved in pageant game events and photo shoots through facetime which has been a new experience but one I won’t forget.

The lockdown period has enabled me to do more interviews and podcasts and promote the organisations I work alongside more frequently due to everyday life commitments changing. I haven’t been able to physically meet my sister queens and directors for planned occasions but only gives me something to look forward to once the lockdown is lifted.

What makes a good pageant role model?

A good pageant role model is someone who promotes a campaign and stands up for something they believe in. Someone who influences others to be brave and speak out or encourage an individual to chase their goals. Someone who takes their time to inspire goodness and change in the world or community. Someone who promotes and radiates positivity and gets involved.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

My favourite pageant round is swimwear, for me this is one of the most amazing rounds because of how empowering it is to be on that stage regardless of shape or size and having all women cheer for one another.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Pageant nerves for me are a good thing because nerves show that you want something. To control my pageant nerves, I take a deep breath and smile and know I can only do my best because I can only be myself.
