Firstly thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions about your pageant journey for my pageant lockdown blog. It’s lovely getting to know fellow pageant queens and more about the systems that they represent.
Can you introduce yourself?
Laura, Age 38 Finalist for Miss Voluptuous England
What made you enter pageants ?
My mum was a Miss England finalist in the 70s, I was always looking at her newspaper clippings, photos and sashes and loved hearing her stories of competition. She was a tom boy like myself as a girl having all brothers, my grandad entered her in a small pageant and she got the bug! I always thought I wasn’t typical pageant queen material, I’ve since learned that there is no such thing! I found a system I love, and I now enjoying it with my whole heart.
Can you tell us about your pageant journey so far ?
I was crowned as Miss Voluptuous UK in 2017, however after a few months into my reign I went through some very turbulent times, losing the sight in one eye, having surgery to try and save it, which was unsuccessful, being mum to a new baby at the same time proved to be a little too much for me to give my reign the effort and passion it deserved, so an ambassador took over the last part of my reign, however I have always been part of the family there and the girls and our director Natalie has always been a wonderful support. I have now learned to live with my changing sight, to get used to falling over, walking into things, but am so much stronger now, so am excited to compete again and raise awareness for my condition.
What made you decide to compete in your current system ?
It the only system I’ve completed in, and it’s like home! I’ve never known such supportive and wonderful girls as my Miss V family, I’ve made life long friends, so I’ve stayed!
What the best thing that pageants have taught you ?
A little self love, confidence, humanity and real friendship
What’s your pageant platform and why ?
My platform is Keratoconus and sight loss awareness. It is the condition I suffer from and am awaiting an organ donor to donate me a cornea for a chance to see again. It changed my whole life, but there was no real information on the condition except for conflicting information on the internet, which was so scary! I want the condition to be more known, and other conditions that cause sight impairment.
What’s your dream title ?
Miss Voluptuous International! I want to take my miss V journey all the way!
If you were to win what would it mean to you ?
It would reaffirm that invisible illness need not hold you back from your dreams, it would mean the world to me to represent my country get my story out there on an international level.
What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant contestants ?
Plan! Preparation! Practice, practice and if you think you’ve practiced enough… Go practice some more 😊
What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final ?
I have been working on my appearance folder, my online charity events, I have been supporting others events, crafting my eco wear and purchasing many many dresses!
What’s your favourite ever appearance ?

Turning on the Christmas lights in my local town with my charity group the coalition of superheroes, I enjoy cosplay in my spare time and myself and other costumer’s created a group to lend superheroes and characters to local events and charity fundraisers.
How has the lockdown due to COVID19 affected your pageant journey?
It has meant that most of my appearances have been online where usually I am out in person, it’s been a new way of working for me, but I’ve enjoyed getting involved
What makes a good pageant role model ?
Approachability, confidence, elegance, love for her system, individuality
What’s your favourite pageant round ?
Eco! I absolutely love to craft and make things, so this is my favourite round and I always go all out to impress!
How do you deal with pageant nerves ?
I’m not really a nervous person, but practice breathing exercises
